How to Troubleshoot Paper Skew on Plotters

A skewed sheet can turn a clean plan set into a reprint job fast. When a wide-format printer or plotter pulls media off track, borders drift, drawings clip at the edge, and banners can come out unusable. Knowing how to troubleshoot paper skew keeps a minor loading issue from becoming a deadline problem, wasted media expense, or a stack of prints nobody can send to the field.

Paper skew is not always a machine failure. It may be as simple as a roll that was not squared to the loading path. But if the same media keeps walking to one side, the cause could be dirty rollers, poor media tension, a worn component, or a calibration setting that needs attention. The key is to work from the simplest cause to the more technical ones without forcing media through the machine.

Start With the Media, Not the Error Message

Most wide-format skew issues begin before printing starts. A plotter can only track paper accurately if the leading edge is straight, the roll is seated evenly, and the material is appropriate for the machine.

Remove the roll or sheet and inspect it on a flat surface. The leading edge should be cut square, not torn, curled, or angled. Even a small diagonal cut can lead a long architectural sheet to drift noticeably by the time it reaches the platen. If the edge is damaged, trim it cleanly with a proper cutting tool before reloading.

For roll media, check the core and roll condition. A crushed core, telescoped roll, loose outer wraps, or material that has been stored in a humid environment can prevent consistent feeding. Paper can also develop curl from temperature swings or long storage. If the roll is visibly uneven, do not expect the printer to correct it on its own.

Media weight matters, too. Bond, coated paper, film, canvas, and banner stock do not feed the same way. Confirm that the selected media type in the printer matches what is actually loaded. Incorrect media settings can apply the wrong vacuum, feed rate, platen gap, or tension behavior, causing the material to wander.

How to Troubleshoot Paper Skew During Loading

Reloading carefully solves more skew problems than most operators expect. Do not rush this step just because the printer appears ready.

First, open the media path and clear any scraps, loose backing, labels, or dust buildup around the loading area. Set the roll onto the spindle correctly, with the core supported securely on both sides. If your unit uses end caps or adapters, make sure they match the core size and are locked in place.

Feed the leading edge into the designated path slowly and evenly. Use the alignment marks, guide lines, or edge references built into the plotter. The material should be straight across the platen, not merely close enough at one side. On a 36-inch or 44-inch plotter, being off by an eighth of an inch at loading can become a major tracking issue on a long drawing set.

Position the pinch rollers only in approved locations. They need to contact the media evenly, but they should not sit over a wrinkled edge, a taped seam, or an area outside the supported media width. Many machines identify roller positions automatically, while others require the operator to move them manually. Follow the placement marks for your model.

Once loaded, use the printer’s media feed or advance function before sending a job. Watch the paper as it moves. If one edge advances faster, wrinkles, or begins to walk sideways immediately, stop the feed and reload. Continuing to print will usually make the problem worse.

Inspect the Rollers and Media Path

If paper skew returns after a careful reload, inspect the parts that grip and guide the media. Pinch rollers, drive rollers, platen surfaces, and sensors all need to be clean and in good condition to maintain straight tracking.

Paper dust, coating residue, adhesive, and ink overspray can reduce roller grip. One dirty roller may slip while the others keep pulling, steering the media to one side. Use the cleaning method approved for your equipment. In general, avoid soaking rollers, using harsh solvents, or scraping residue with metal tools. Those shortcuts can damage rubber surfaces or sensors and create a bigger repair.

Look for rollers that are glazed, cracked, flattened, loose, or not making full contact with the media. Compare their pressure and appearance across the carriage path. Uneven roller pressure is a common reason that a machine feeds correctly with lightweight bond paper but skews with heavier coated stock or banner material.

Check the platen and feed path for obstructions. Small scraps can lodge under a roller, and a strip of torn paper can interfere with a sensor. Also inspect the take-up reel if one is in use. A take-up reel pulling too aggressively, winding unevenly, or operating out of alignment can introduce side tension and skew the material even when the printer’s feed system is working correctly.

Verify Settings, Calibration, and Job Setup

Mechanical checks are only part of the answer. Wide-format printers use settings and sensors to manage media width, feed compensation, vacuum, and print margins. If those settings do not match the material or job, a good loading process can still produce poor results.

Start by confirming the media width reported by the machine. If the printer identifies a 36-inch roll as a different width, clean the media sensors and reload the roll. A bad width reading can affect where the machine expects the edges to be and may trigger skew warnings or unexpected cropping.

Next, run the manufacturer-recommended paper advance or media feed calibration for the stock you are using. This is especially worthwhile when changing from plain bond to heavier presentation media, synthetic material, or banner stock. Calibration will not fix a worn roller, but it can correct feed behavior that shows up as uneven line spacing, shifting output, or minor tracking errors.

Review the driver and RIP settings before blaming the hardware. Verify the selected roll width, source, media type, orientation, and margin settings. For construction plans and engineering drawings, make sure the page size matches the actual output requirement. A job set up for the wrong width can look like a skew issue when the real problem is clipping or automatic rotation.

If the printer has an automatic skew check, leave it enabled unless there is a specific production reason to change it. The feature may pause a job when it detects misalignment, but that pause is cheaper than wasting several feet of specialty media.

Know When Skew Points to a Service Problem

Repeated paper skew with multiple rolls and proper loading is a service issue, not an operator issue. That is particularly true when the problem begins suddenly, affects every media type, or is paired with unusual noises, inconsistent feed, roller marks, sensor errors, or frequent media jams.

Do not keep forcing the material through the printer to finish one more set. A slipping drive system, worn pinch rollers, misaligned feed assembly, or faulty sensor can damage media, create head strikes, and extend downtime. For teams printing bid sets, permit drawings, or presentation graphics, the lost production time often costs more than addressing the underlying issue promptly.

Keep a simple record of what happened: printer model, media type and width, whether the issue occurs from a roll or sheet feed, where the material begins drifting, and any messages on the control panel. That information helps a technician isolate the cause faster and reduces the back-and-forth that delays a repair.

The best prevention is consistent loading and routine cleaning. Schedule roller and platen cleaning as part of regular plotter maintenance, especially in busy print rooms where bond dust accumulates quickly. When you introduce a new media type, test it with a short advance before running a full production job. That small check can save an expensive banner, a long plan set, and the time it takes to print everything twice.

Straight media tracking is one of those details that stays invisible when equipment is maintained properly. Keep it that way by stopping at the first sign of drift, correcting the cause, and putting dependable output back in the hands of the people waiting on it.
