What Causes Plotter Banding and How to Fix It
A deadline drawing should come off the plotter clean, readable, and ready to issue. When it comes out with faint horizontal lines, uneven color, or repeating stripes, production slows down fast. What causes plotter banding usually comes down to one of a few mechanical, ink delivery, media, or file-processing issues. The pattern itself is a useful clue, but the wrong fix can waste ink, media, and valuable time.
For architects, contractors, engineers, and print rooms, banding is not just a cosmetic problem. It can make rendered site plans look unprofessional, obscure fine details in graphics, and force costly reprints when a bid set needs to go out now. The good news is that most banding problems can be isolated with a disciplined check of the printer, the supplies, and the job settings.
What Causes Plotter Banding in Large-Format Prints?
Banding is a visible line or stripe running across a printed image. Most often, it appears horizontally because the printhead moves side to side while the media advances forward in small increments. If ink placement, media movement, or printhead performance is off even slightly, the result shows up as a repeating band.
The appearance matters. Thin white lines in a color fill often point to missing nozzles or restricted ink flow. Darker repeating stripes may indicate too much ink, an alignment issue, or a media advance error. A banding problem that appears only in one color points you toward that ink channel. If it affects every color and happens at regular intervals, calibration, media handling, or print mode is more likely.
Clogged or Failing Printhead Nozzles
Nozzle loss is one of the most common causes of plotter banding. Pigment inks can dry at the nozzle face when a machine sits idle, especially in a dry office or a print room with inconsistent temperature and humidity. Dust, paper fibers, and ink buildup can also interfere with clean firing.
Run the printer’s nozzle check or printhead test pattern before changing settings. If the pattern has gaps, broken lines, or missing sections, perform the manufacturer-recommended cleaning cycle and test again. One standard cleaning may solve a minor issue. Repeated deep cleanings, however, use a considerable amount of ink and do not fix every problem. Printhead Alignment Problems
A plotter can have clear nozzles and still produce bands if the printhead is not aligned correctly. Alignment controls how ink drops from different nozzles and color channels land on the page. When the drops overlap poorly or leave small gaps, solid fills and shaded areas can look striped, grainy, or fuzzy.
This often shows up after a printhead replacement, a machine move, a firmware update, or a change in media type. Automatic alignment routines are usually effective when the plotter is mechanically sound and the correct media is loaded. Manual alignment may be necessary on certain models, but it should be done carefully. A rushed adjustment can make a minor defect worse.
Incorrect Media Type or Media Advance Calibration
Wide-format printers are built to handle a range of bond papers, coated papers, films, canvas, banner material, and specialty media. Each material absorbs ink differently and moves through the printer differently. If the selected media type does not match the roll on the machine, the plotter may lay down too much or too little ink, use the wrong platen settings, or advance the media at the wrong rate.
Media advance errors create a very recognizable repeating pattern. The printer may be placing each pass a fraction too close together or too far apart. On coated presentation stock, that can look like alternating dark and light bars. On CAD bond, it may be subtler but still visible in gray fills, aerial imagery, and color renderings.
Confirm the media setting in both places: on the plotter control panel and in the print driver or RIP software. Then run media calibration if your model supports it. Also check that the roll is loaded squarely, the spindle is secure, and the media path is clean. A roll that tracks poorly can cause print defects that resemble a printhead issue.
Ink, Environment, and Maintenance Issues
Banding is not always caused by the print job itself. Supplies and the operating environment can have just as much impact on output quality.
Low ink is an obvious concern, but a cartridge that shows ink remaining is not automatically delivering ink correctly. A damaged cartridge, expired supply, blocked vent, or issue in the ink delivery system can lead to intermittent starvation. If banding is isolated to one color, inspect that cartridge first and verify that it is an approved supply for the specific machine.
Temperature and humidity also matter more than many offices expect. Excessively dry air encourages nozzle drying and static. High humidity can affect certain papers and coatings, contributing to feed inconsistencies. Store media in its packaging when possible, let it acclimate before critical print runs, and keep the printer area reasonably clean.
Regular maintenance prevents many avoidable service calls. Follow the printer’s maintenance schedule for cleaning stations, wipers, cutters, and waste ink components. Never wipe a printhead with an improvised cloth or cleaning chemical. That can damage delicate nozzles and turn a recoverable issue into an expensive replacement.
Print Settings That Can Create Banding
Before assuming there is a hardware failure, look at the job settings. Fast draft modes use fewer passes and can reveal banding that would not be visible in a higher-quality mode. That may be an acceptable trade-off for internal check prints or high-volume line drawings, but it is usually the wrong choice for client-facing renderings, posters, or color-heavy presentation boards.
Resolution, pass count, ink limits, color management, and driver version can all affect output. A mismatched or outdated driver may send settings that do not fit the plotter or media. Files with heavy transparencies, gradients, or embedded color profiles can expose problems that a simple black-and-white drawing will not.
Start by printing the same file in a standard or high-quality mode. If the banding disappears, the machine may be functioning correctly and the production setting needs adjustment. If the defect remains in every mode, print an internal test page directly from the plotter. This separates a printer problem from a workstation, driver, RIP, or file problem.
A Practical Way to Diagnose Plotter Banding
When jobs are backing up, random troubleshooting is expensive. Work from the simplest test to the more involved checks.
First, print a nozzle check and an internal test pattern. If the internal pattern bands, focus on the plotter, printhead, ink, and media system. If the internal pattern is clean but the submitted job bands, check the driver, print mode, file settings, and RIP workflow.
Next, inspect the media. Verify the roll type, width, loading, feed path, and selected preset. Then run printhead alignment and media calibration as appropriate for the model. Finally, test with a known-good roll of compatible media and approved ink. This approach avoids changing five variables at once, which makes it nearly impossible to identify the real cause.
Keep a record of the pattern, the color affected, the media in use, and the results of the nozzle check. That information gives a service technician a much faster starting point than simply reporting that the printer is making lines.
When Cleaning Is Not Enough
If banding returns immediately after cleaning, repeats in the same color channel, or worsens over several jobs, stop running critical output through the machine. Continued printing can waste expensive media and make a deadline problem larger.
A trained technician can evaluate printhead health, ink delivery, encoder strips, carriage movement, feed accuracy, and maintenance assemblies. These components work together, and the visible defect does not always identify the failed part.
